Newport (Shropshire) & District Chamber Of Commerce |
The Historic Market Town of Newport sits on the Staffordshire/Shropshire border almost midway between Stafford and Shrewsbury. It is a town of some 10,000 population with another 5,000 in the outlying villages and farming district.
On the south edge of the Town is Lilleshall National Sports Centre which is a centre of excellence for several Olympic sports and which houses the FA School of Excellence, which includes amongst its "old boys" Michael Owen and Andy Cole - to name just two of the up-and-coming generation of soccer stars to have passed through its doors. To the west lies Harper Adams University College which is world renowned as a centre for Agricultural Education and Research. Fans of Radio 4's The Archers will know Harper Adams as the alma mater of both David and Ruth Archer.
There has been a trading settlement at Newport since Roman times. The Roman road to Chester (now the A41) passes through the town and Watling Street (now the A5) passes south west of the town.
For centuries the town has existed as a Market Town for the surrounding farming lands of Shropshire and Staffordshire).

The Chamber is a core partner in the Newport Economic Partnership which brings together representatives of business, commerce, education and local government to work together for the benefit of the town and the area. It is affiliated to the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, Training & Enterprise and the British Chambers of Commerce.
